Dealing with Mood Swings

4948

Quite often we find people saying “oh that person is so unpredictable!” If you find this unpredictable nature in someone, try not to stamp such a person crazy even if he or she acts like one for the time being. Mood swings is a common phenomenon among all living entities suffering under the three modes of material nature. In fact, at times you might be finding yourself in such an embarrassing situation.

It’s happened a million times before. You’re walking along, feeling just fine, when suddenly an interaction with a friend or a stranger, or even an idle thought, leads you to what feels like a pit of despair. Or maybe you’re hanging out with friends, and an innocent comment leads you to feel enraged.

Sounds familiar? Well, don’t get frightened. Such behavior is symptom of something called tamo guna, or the mode of ignorance. There are three modes of material nature that control a living entity’s mental state, his thought process and his physical activities. They are satva, rajas and tamas. At any given time one or more modes of nature are actively affecting your mind, intelligence, and ultimately, consciousness, i.e. the soul, and any one among the three dominates the other two. The dominating mode of nature directly affects your thoughts and activities.

If you deal with mood swings every once in a while and find it frustrating, that’s one thing. But if you feel like you are controlled by your moods and fluctuate from very high to very low for little to no reason and feel like you can’t make it better on your own, then it may be time to seek professional help. Mood swings are a symptom of everything from stress and anxiety to bipolar disorder and depression, and you should see a doctor to talk about your problems to find the best course of action.

This is not to say that a doctor or medication is always the right answer when it comes to mood swings. But if your mood swings are moderate or severe, then it’s best to explore all of your options before trying to tackle it yourself. (Read full story at http://www.wikihow.com/Control-Mood-Swings).

A word of caution- as mentioned above, this is not to say that a doctor will always have the right answer. The irony is, doctors can hardly have a right solution to such challenges. Most of the medications available may only help temporary relief, at the best. Then what to do?

First of all, one has to understand the difference between gross and subtle bodies, and work on purifying the subtle body, which is made of mind, intelligence and false ego. This is easily done by engaging in the loving devotional service of the Supreme Lord. One should not get disturbed by their religious sentiments but follow the process seriously keeping in mind his or her own health.

Srimad Bhagavatam (1.2.19) says this:

tada rajas-tamo-bhavah kama-lobhadayas ca ye
ceta etair anaviddham sthitam sattve prasidati

TRANSLATION: As soon as irrevocable loving service is established in the heart, the effects of nature’s modes of passion and ignorance, such as lust, desire and hankering, disappear from the heart. Then the devotee is established in goodness, and he becomes completely happy.

There are literally millions today who have taken to the loving devotional service of Lord Krishna and have benefited from it. Since devotional service works directly on the soul, one is gradually able to transcend the influence of modes of material nature. thus relieving himself permanently from mental stress, mood swings and such other unwanted phenomena. Should you need any help with starting or practicing devotional service, feel free to contact us. We are always glad to assist you to the best of our ability.
