Loved, directly or indirectly, by one and all, moving and non-moving beings, Srimati Radharani, more commonly known as Radha, Radhika, Radhe and many other names, the eternal consort of Sri Krishna, has remained a mystery since millenniums. \u00a0Some say She was the most beautiful gopi in Vrindavan among other gopis, who loved Krishna more than their very own selves. Others say She was an incarnation of Lakshmi devi, the eternal consort of Lord Vishnu. People also curiously discuss whether She was older than Krishna or younger, whether She was married to Krishna or not, and so on.<\/p>\n

Radha is not what most people think, an ordinary village girl who fell in love with Krishna, or a mythological beauty, or, even worse, an imaginary icon of love. \u00a0In an earlier article on the same subject matter<\/a> I had quoted Srila Prabhupada’s lecture on\u00a0September 18, 1969 in London wherein he has stressed on the fact that one cannot understand Srimati Radha or Her relationship with Sri Krishna unless and until one’s heart is completely purified of lusty desires.<\/p>\n

Before we go into the philosophical aspect of Srimati Radharani’s personality, let me share with you a beautiful event that took place at the palace of Her father, King Vrishabhanu.<\/p>\n

It is described that one day King Vrishabhanu came to the Yamuna river to bathe and found himself engulfed in a golden aura. It was emanating from a divine lotus on which a baby girl was found! When the king, overjoyed with happiness, returned to his palace with the baby, queen Kirtida was delighted to see that astoundingly beautiful baby girl. But after a few moments of observation, she was shocked to notice that the girl appeared blind.<\/p>\n

Now, one may wonder – how can a girl be found on a lotus flower floating in the river and that also with closed eyes? Yes She can! If we want to understand transcendence, we will have to have an open mind to hear from those who have seen it. Vedic scriptures are apaurusheya<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0that which is not a creation of mortal beings. Unless we can see the transcendental activities of Krishna and His associates, we have to see them through Shastra-chaksu, the eyes of Vedic scriptures.<\/p>\n

\"radhaseeingkrishna1\"<\/a>When Krishna\u2019s mother, Yashoda, heard that her best friend Kirtida had a baby, she came to visit her along with her husband and son. At one point, Krishna crawled up to the cradle and pulled Himself up and looked in. At that moment, Srimati Radharani\u2019s eyes opened wide and blossomed like lotuses. Everyone was delighted.<\/p>\n

The reason why baby Radha didn’t open Her eyes prior to seeing Krishna is also mentioned in the scriptures. It is said that when Lord Krishna was going to appear on Earth, His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani, had asked from Him a boon that She would not have to see anything of this world until She first sees Him. Lord Krishna had granted it and so He came to see Her.<\/p>\n

Radhastami, \u00a0the appearance day of Srimati Radharani, comes 15 days after Janmastami, the appearance day of Lord Krishna. She is\u00a0K\u1e5bishna\u2019s pleasure potency. R\u0101dh\u0101-k\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a-pra\u1e47aya-vik\u1e5btir hl\u0101din\u012b-\u015bakti\u1e25<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"radhaSrila Prabupada says:<\/p>\n

“So this K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, when He wants to enjoy, what kind of enjoyment He will have? That has been discussed by \u015ar\u012bla J\u012bva Gosv\u0101m\u012b. K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is Para\u1e41 Brahman. Brahman, Param\u0101tm\u0101, then Para\u1e41 Brahman. Absolute Truth, three different features. Someone is realizing the Absolute Truth as impersonal Brahman. Jnanis<\/em>, those who are trying to understand the Absolute Truth by mental speculation, by dint of his own knowledge, he\u2019s realizing the Absolute Truth as impersonal Brahman.’<\/p>\n

“And those who are trying to understand the Absolute Truth by meditation, yogis, they realize the Absolute Truth as Param\u0101tm\u0101. Param\u0101tm\u0101 is situated in everyone\u2019s heart. \u012a\u015bvara\u1e25<\/em> sarva-bh\u016bt\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 h\u1e5bd-de\u015be \u2019rjuna ti\u1e63\u1e6dhati<\/em> (Bg. 18.61). That feature, Param\u0101tm\u0101 feature. A\u1e47\u1e0dantara-stha\u1e41 param\u0101nu-cay\u0101ntara-stha\u1e41<\/em> govindam \u0101di-puru\u1e63a\u1e41 tam aha\u1e41 bhaj\u0101mi<\/em>. That Param\u0101tm\u0101 feature is one expansion of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. It is stated in the Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101, athav\u0101<\/em> bahunaitena ki\u1e41 j\u00f1\u0101tena tav\u0101rjuna ek\u0101\u1e41\u1e63ena vi\u1e63\u1e6dabhy\u0101ham.<\/em> Ek\u0101\u1e41\u1e63ena<\/em>. When K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and Arjuna was trying to understand about different potential existence of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, so He explained in the Twelfth Chapter, \u201cI am this. Amongst them, I am this. Amongst them\u2026\u201d Like that. And He concluded that \u201cHow far I shall go on? Better try to understand that only one plenary portion of Me, by entering this universe, the whole cosmic manifestation is existing.\u201d Ek\u0101\u1e41\u1e63ena sthito jagat. Jagat<\/em>.’<\/p>\n

\"krishna“This material world is existing on one plenary portion of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. And K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a enters, a\u1e47\u1e0d\u0101ntara-stha\u1e41<\/em> param\u0101nu-cay\u0101ntara-stham<\/em>, He enters within this universe. Without His entering, this universe cannot exist. Just like without the spirit soul\u2019s entering within this body, this body cannot exist. As soon as the spirit soul goes out, immediately the body\u2019s useless. However the body may be prime minister or anything else, as soon as the soul is out of this body, it is not worth even a farthing. Similarly, because K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a enters within this universe, therefore the universe has value. Otherwise it is simply a lump of matter; it has no value. Ek\u0101\u1e41\u1e63ena sthito jagat<\/em>.’<\/p>\n

\"krishna<\/a>“So try to understand K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. And when K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a want to enjoy, what kind of enjoyment that shall be? Try to understand this point. K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is so great; God is great, everyone knows. So when the great wants to enjoy, then what quality of enjoyment that should be? That is to be understood. R\u0101dh\u0101-k\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2026<\/em> Therefore Svar\u016bpa D\u0101modara Gosv\u0101m\u012b has written a verse, r\u0101dh\u0101-k\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a-pra\u1e47aya-vik\u1e5bti\u1e25<\/em>. The loving affairs of R\u0101dh\u0101 and K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is not ordinary, these material loving affairs, although it appears like that. But one who cannot understand K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, avaj\u0101nanti m\u0101\u1e41 m\u016b\u1e0dh\u0101\u1e25. M\u016b\u1e0dha<\/em>, rascals, fools, they understand K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a as ordinary man. As soon as we take K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a as one of us\u2026 M\u0101nu\u1e63\u012b\u1e41 tanum \u0101\u015brit\u0101\u1e41, para\u1e41 bh\u0101vam aj\u0101nanta\u1e25<\/em>. These rascals, they do not know para\u1e41 bhavam<\/em>. They try to imitate K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s l\u012bl\u0101, r\u0101sa-l\u012bl\u0101<\/em>. There are many rascals. So these things are going on. There is no understanding of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. To understand K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is very difficult.’<\/p>\n

\"radharani1\"“We are trying to understand the chief potency of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b is the pleasure potency of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. As we understand from Vedic literature, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a has many varieties of potencies. Par\u0101sya \u015baktir vividhaiva<\/em> \u015bruyate<\/em>. Just like the same example, as a big man has got many assistants and secretaries so that he hasn\u2019t got to do anything personally, simply by his will everything is done, similarly, the Supreme Personality of Godhead has got varieties of energies, and everything is being done so nicely. Just like this material energy. This material world, where we are now living\u2026 This is called material energy. Bahir-a\u1e45ga-\u015bakti<\/em>. The Sanskrit name is bahir-a\u1e45ga<\/em>, external energy of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. So how nicely it is being done, everything in the material energy. That is also explained in the Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101,<\/em> may\u0101dhyak\u1e63e\u1e47a prak\u1e5bti\u1e25 s\u016byate sa-car\u0101caram:<\/em> (Bg. 9.10) \u201cUnder My superintendence the material energy is working.\u201d The material energy is not blind. It is\u2026 On the background there is K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. May\u0101dhyak\u1e63e\u1e47a prak\u1e5bti\u1e25<\/em> (Bg. 9.10). Prak\u1e5bti<\/em> means this material energy. nal energy. Similarly, there is another energy, which is internal energy.<\/p>\n

“By the internal energy the spiritual world is being manifested. Par\u0101s tasm\u0101t tu bhava\u1e25 anya\u1e25<\/em> (Bg. 8.20) Another energy, par\u0101<\/em>, superior, transcendental, the spiritual world. As this material world is being manipulated under the external energy, similarly, the spiritual world is also conducted by the internal potency. That internal potency is R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b.’<\/p>\n

“If we do not understand K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, how we can understand how K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is enjoying? That is not possible. But the Gosv\u0101m\u012bs, they\u2019re giving us information what is the pleasure potency of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. That is \u015ar\u012bmat\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b.’<\/p>\n

“In the Ved\u0101nta-s\u016btra<\/em> the Absolute Truth is described as \u0101nandamaya<\/em>, always in pleasure potency. That \u0101nandamaya<\/em> potency\u2026 Just like \u0101nanda<\/em>. When you want \u0101nanda<\/em>, pleasure, you cannot have it alone. Alone, you cannot enjoy. When you are in the circles of friend or family or other associates, you feel pleasure. Just like I am speaking. The speaking is very pleasing when there are many persons here. I cannot speak alone here. That is not \u0101nanda<\/em>. I can speak here at night, dead of night, nobody here. That is not \u0101nanda. \u0100nanda<\/em> means there must be others. So because K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, the Absolute Truth, is \u0101nandamaya<\/em>, therefore eko bahu sy\u0101m<\/em>, He has become many. We are also K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s part and parcel, to give pleasure to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. And the chief pleasure potency is R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b.’<\/p>\n

“We pray to R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b because She is the pleasure potency of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a<\/em> means \u201call-attractive.\u201d But R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b is so great that She attracts K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is all-attractive, and She is attractive (attractor) of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. So what is the position of \u015ar\u012bmat\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b? We should try to understand this day and offer our obeisances to R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b. R\u0101dhe<\/em> v\u1e5bnd\u0101vane\u015bvar\u012b.’<\/em><\/p>\n

\"http:\/\/earthstation1.simplenet.com\"<\/a>“R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b is hari-priy\u0101<\/em>, very dear to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. So if we approach K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a through R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, through the mercy of R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, then it becomes very easy. If R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b recommends that \u201cThis devotee is very nice,\u201d then K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a immediately accepts, however fool I may be. Because it is recommended by R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a accepts. Therefore in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana you\u2019ll find all the devotees, they\u2019re chanting more R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b\u2019s name than K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s. Wherever you\u2019ll go, you\u2019ll find the devotees are addressing, \u201cJaya R\u0101dhe.\u201d You\u2019ll find still in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana. They are glorifying R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b. They\u2019re more interested, worshiping R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b. Because however fallen I may be, if some way or other I can please R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, then it is very easy for me to understand K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Otherwise, manu\u1e63y\u0101\u1e47\u0101\u1e41 sahasre\u1e63u<\/em> ka\u015bcid yatati siddhaye<\/em> yatat\u0101m api siddh\u0101n\u0101\u1e41<\/em> ka\u015bcid vetti m\u0101\u1e41 tattvata\u1e25<\/em> (Bg. 7.3)’<\/p>\n

“If you go by the speculative process to understand K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, it will take many, many lives. But if you take devotional service, just try to please R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, and K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a will be gotten very easily. Because R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b can deliver K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. She is so great devotee, the emblem of mah\u0101-bh\u0101gavata<\/em>. Even K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a cannot understand what is R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b\u2019s quality. Even K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, although He says ved\u0101ha\u1e41 samat\u012bt\u0101ni<\/em>, \u201cI know everything,\u201d still, He fails to understand R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b. R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b is so great. He says that\u2026 Actually, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a knows everything. In order to understand R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a accepted the position of R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b. K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a wanted to understand the potency of R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b. K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a thought that \u201cI am full. I am complete in every respect, but still, I want to understand R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b. Why?\u201d This propensity made K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a obliged to accept the propensities of R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, to understand K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, Himself.’<\/p>\n

“This process of devotional service is taught by Caitanya Mah\u0101prabhu. Not that very easily, \u201cWe have seen K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a or seen R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b in r\u0101sa-l\u012bl\u0101<\/em>.\u201d No, not like that. Feel the separation. The more you feel separation from K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, you should understand that you are advancing. Don\u2019t try to see K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a artificially. Be advanced in separation feeling, and then it will be perfect. That is the teachings of Lord Caitanya. Because with our material eyes we cannot see K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Ata\u1e25 \u015br\u012b-k\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a- n\u0101m\u0101di na bhaved gr\u0101hyam<\/em> indriyai\u1e25<\/em> [BRS. 1.2.234] With our material senses we cannot see K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, we cannot hear about K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s name. But sevonmukhe hi<\/em> jihv\u0101dau<\/em>. When you engage yourself in the service of the Lord\u2026 Where the service begins? Jihv\u0101dau<\/em>. The service begins from the tongue. Not from the legs, eyes, or ears. It begins from the tongue. Sevonmukhe hi jihv\u0101dau<\/em>. If you begin service through your tongue\u2026 How? Chant Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Use your tongue. Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, Hare Hare\/ Hare R\u0101ma, Hare R\u0101ma, R\u0101ma R\u0101ma, Hare Hare. And take K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a pras\u0101dam<\/em>. The tongue has got two business: to articulate sound, Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a; and take pras\u0101dam<\/em>. By this process you\u2019ll realize K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>“Don\u2019t try to see K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. You cannot see K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a with your material eyes. Neither you can hear about Him with your material ears. Neither you can touch. But if you engage your tongue in the service of the Lord, then He\u2019ll reveal Himself to you: \u201cHere I am.\u201d That is wanted. So feel separation of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a just like R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, as Lord Caitanya teaches us, and engage your tongue in the service of the Lord; then, one day, when you are mature, you\u2019ll see K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a eye to eye.”<\/p>\n
