{"id":94675,"date":"2015-12-10T10:42:04","date_gmt":"2015-12-10T05:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mayapurvoice.com\/svagatam\/?p=94675"},"modified":"2023-12-22T16:51:56","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T11:21:56","slug":"understanding-pitta-dosha-ayurveda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mayapurvoice.com\/svagatam\/understanding-pitta-dosha-ayurveda\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Pitta dosha in Ayurveda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/strawberry_macro-t1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4406\" src=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/strawberry_macro-t1-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"strawberry_macro-t1\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/about\/about-ayurveda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ayurveda<\/a> operates on the principle of three constitutional types<a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/whats-a-dosha-in-ayurveda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> or doshas<\/a>: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.\u00a0 The doshas are further differentiated by their qualities or gunas.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/services-rates\/ayurveda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ayurvedic practitioners<\/a> examine the gunas to determine which components of\u00a0 prakruti are contributing <a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/prakruti-vikruti-ayurveda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to vikruti<\/a>.\u00a0 We previously explored the gunas or <a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/qualities-of-vata-dosha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qualities of Vata<\/a>.\u00a0 Let\u2019s now examine the qualities of Pitta dosha.<\/p>\n<p>The ancient Ayurvedic text,\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/go.magik.ly\/r\/vedichealing\/11050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashtanga Hrydayam,<\/a> elucidates the qualities of Pitta in this sutra:<\/p>\n<p>Pittam sasneha tikshnoshnam laghu visram, saram dravam<\/p>\n<p><strong>QUALITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first quality of Pitta is oily (sasneha or snigdha in Sanskrit).\u00a0 Oily can manifest as oily skin, oily hair, or acne.\u00a0 Pitta people have a hard time tolerating oily foods and would do best to minimize fatty, fried foods in their diet. Otherwise, they can be prone to issues with their liver or gall bladder due to increased bile production which then does not get properly assimilated in the body.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/LLPnVT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kutki is<\/a> an herb which helps improve the function of bile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/vegetables_macro-t1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4407\" src=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/vegetables_macro-t1-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"vegetables_macro-t1\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a>Pitta is also known for being sharp (tikshna).\u00a0 Pitta people are very achievement oriented, intelligent, and critical.\u00a0 They enjoy conversing with fellow smart people. These intellects do not waste their words and converse primarily to learn or convey information.\u00a0 They can be quite direct.\u00a0 Pittas also have<a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/agni-the-digestive-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> tikshna agni <\/a>which often acts up at noon.\u00a0 Eating sharp foods such as chilies, onions, and garlic also aggravates Pitta dosha, creating hyperacidity. But they love these!\u00a0 Thus the axiom, \u201clike increases like\u201d applies here again.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/GVlkeD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Avipatikar churna<\/a> is traditionally used to balance acidity in the GI tract.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike <a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/qualities-of-vata-dosha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vata people<\/a> who feel cold easily, Pitta people tend to run hot (ushna).\u00a0 They do not tolerate heat well and prefer cool climates and settings.\u00a0 Pitta people also can be quite hot tempered and easily lose their cool.\u00a0 When<a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/prakruti-vikruti-ayurveda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Pitta vikruti<\/a> manifests, they are also prone to heartburn, inflammation, and ulcers.\u00a0 Eating hot, spicy food and drinking alcohol will increase Pitta dosha<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/lemon_water_splash-t2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4408\" src=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/lemon_water_splash-t2-300x194.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/lemon_water_splash-t2-300x194.jpg 300w, http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/lemon_water_splash-t2.jpg 510w\" alt=\"lemon_water_splash-t2\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a>Another of the qualities of <a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/whats-a-dosha-in-ayurveda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pitta dosha<\/a> is light (laghu).\u00a0 This manifests differently than the light quality for Vata dosha.\u00a0 Pittas tend to be very sensitive to bright lights and sunlight.\u00a0 Consequently, they are prone to moles, freckles and melanoma more than either Vata or Kapha people.\u00a0 They are likely to wear glasses and need sunglasses during the daytime.\u00a0 Pitta people have strong appetites and can get hypoglycemic or light headed if they do not eat on time.<\/p>\n<p>Pitta people are prone to excess sweating and they have a unique strong fleshy smell (visram).\u00a0 Interestingly, they are also often the ones most sensitized to scents and fragrances.<\/p>\n<p>Being achievement oriented, Pitta people enjoy spreading (saram) their name and fame. Pittas are also prone to diseases which spread throughout their body, such as inflammation and hives, rash, or urticaria.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.banyanbotanicals.com\/neem-oil\/?avad=179702_c9d0f039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Neem oil <\/a>is commonly use for such conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/delicious_fruits_display-t1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4409\" src=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/delicious_fruits_display-t1-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"delicious_fruits_display-t1\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a>The final of the qualities of Pitta is liquid (drava).\u00a0 Pitta people are prone to excess thirst, sweat, and urination.\u00a0 Pitta dosha is comprised of the elements fire and water.\u00a0 Consuming too many liquids around or with meals will impair <a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/agni-the-digestive-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agni<\/a> and thus put out the digestive fire.\u00a0 This quality can also manifest in the form of excess stomach acids.<\/p>\n<p>CAUSES OF IMBALANCE<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vedichealing.com\/prakruti-vikruti-ayurveda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pitta vikruti<\/a> can be caused to poor dietary habits, incompatible food combining, poor lifestyle habits, and a daily routine which imbalances Pitta dosha.
