Jagannath Puri saw an unprecedented assembly of devotees on this Rath yatra day, partly due to the Navakalevara event. A crowd of almost two million is certainly extraordinary. Ordinarily, the density of devotees between Singhadwar and Marchikot on a normal Rath Yatra used to be around 90 per cent. The density decreased to 60 to 70 per cent beyond Marchikot. The State police had set up an integrated control room with 200 CCTVs which monitored the ingress of crowd during the last two days.
It was not only Puri, there are hundreds of Rath yatras around the world nowadays with ISKCON taking the leadership role in spreading this ancient transcendental tradition of pulling the chariot of Lord Krishna, who is known as Jagannath, along with His brother Baladeva and sister Subhadra devi. Along with Puri, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and, of course, Sri Mayapur celebrated the festival with thousands of devotees lining up to pull the rope of the chariots and chanting the holy Names of the Lord through out the parade.
There will be Ulta Rath yatra on 26th July when Their Lordships will return to Their home. Jay Jagannath Baladeva Subhadra devi!
