What does the Mexico earthquake tell us?

The Earth has been tortured to the core. Environment has been messed around for decades. Agriculture is industrialized, rivers are blocked by monstrous dams, oceans are drilled for oil and minerals, rain clouds are throttled by pollution and poisonous gases, digging the Earth deeper for metal and coal resources has become a subject matter of auctions, forests are invaded by human population and wild animals are struggling to survive.

Number of Earthquakes is on the rise across the world. Killings 100s, sometimes 1000s, and making tens of thousands homeless, these earthquakes stand to be the most scarring natural calamity. The worst part is, earthquakes come without notice. The recent massive Mexico earthquake is considered the strongest in a century.

The irony is, all those scientific devices which are supposed to predict and warn people of such calamities hardly give any useful clue and would crumble themselves if they were to be hit by such earthquakes.

mexico earthquake

“Fifty-eight people died in the 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck off Mexico’s Pacific coast and rocked numerous southern states, authorities said. The National Emergency Committee on Friday confirmed 45 deaths in Oaxaca state, 10 in …”- Mexico earthquake: Death toll rises to 58

Do we learn something? It is not about being not sympathetic. We do sympathize with the concerned ones. The point here is, while trying to listen to signals coming from the outer space and debating on alien intelligence, the modern scientist needs to first listen to what is happening around them and learn lessons from it.

Interestingly (translate ridiculously) some scientists propose that there are some faults in the inner structure of the Earth that cause earthquakes. Why blame the Earth? And why blame the nature?

How long will mother nature keep warning when foolish people are not willing to listen? These people are the leaders of the world who are misguided by another class of foolish people, namely modern scientists.

What more? Trees and domestic animals are slaughtered indiscriminately, women are both encouraged and forced to shed their cloths, modesty is rapidly vanishing, chastity is considered outdated, and gay marriages are becoming part of lifestyle. Human trafficking, selling of body parts, thriving medical industry at the cost of lives, and criminal negligence of the basic rights of innocent creatures like cows and bulls, birds and reptiles has gone rampant. The list of sins committed on the planet sees no end and we still want to think there is something wrong with the Earth! (Earthquakes on steroids? Stop blaming the Earth!)

But we complain and scratch our heads when calamities descend. The Vedic scriptures clearly describe all of today’s problems along with their solution. Are we willing to study it? As Srila Prabhupada says, people have time to do all kinds of time-wasting nonsense but when we talk about spiritual life they don’t have time!  That is called misfortune. It is time the modern civilization understands its limit and turns to taking shelter of the Supreme Lord.
